The Rochester Red Wings won their third game in as many days, defeating the Norfolk Tides 5-1 Saturday night on the back of an excellent performance from RHP Cade Cavalli.
Cavalli torched Norfolk in his third start in the month of August, giving up just three hits and a run through seven innings. The Nationals’ top prospect logged a season-high 11 strikeouts in the win, good for the fourth most in a game amongst International League pitchers this season, and most by a Wings pitcher since Lewis Thorpe punched out 12 on April 23, 2019. Cavalli also leads all Rochester pitchers in strikeouts this season with 96.
Norfolk scored on an RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead, but it would vanish soon after. Rochester 1B John Nogowski logged a sac-fly in the second inning that plated RF David Dahl and tied the game at 1-1. C Riley Adams followed suit, hitting his own sac-fly in the fourth to score 2B Jake Noll as the Wings went up 2-1.
CF Alex Call launched the game’s first homer to left in the sixth that extended the Wings’ lead to 3-1. The scoring would continue, with Adams registering his second RBI of the day with a base hit that scored PH Nick Banks as the Wings capped off a two-run sixth inning in the driver’s seat.
Call drove in another in the eighth, giving the Wings a 5-1 lead on yet another sac-fly that brought home 3B Jake Alu.
LHP Francisco Perez took the mound in the eighth and held the Tides hitless before RHP Reed Garrett got the ball in the ninth and did the same. Wings pitchers gave up just three hits in the win, the third fewest allowed in a game all season (they’ve done it five other times).
The Red Wings notched their third straight win with the Saturday night victory, making it the first three-game win streak for Rochester since June 2-4 against Buffalo. Their streak has been made possible by their 22 runs scored over the last three games, the most over a three-game stretch since May 27-29, when they also collected 22.
The Wings will send RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon to the mound on Sunday with a chance to win the series against Norfolk. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
