CORPUS CHRISTI – The Cumbias wrapped up their debut with a 7-0 victory over Amarillo to secure a series win Sunday evening before 3,375 fans at Whataburger Field.

The Hooks, playing as the Corpus Christi Cumbias this weekend, have won three of their last four series.

Sunday’s gem came courtesy of a five-inning start by lefty Julio Robaina, who held the Sod Poodles to three singles and a walk while striking out six.

CC starters went at least five innings in each of the final five games of the series, striking out 38 against 10 hits, four walks and three runs in 28 1/3.

The Hooks chased Panamanian southpaw Kenny Hernandez from the game by batting around in the second. Bryan Arias and Luke Berryhill both notched two-run singles as the home club struck for four two-out runs.

Catcher Cesar Salazar made it 7-0 in the fifth with a three-run home run to right field off Ty Tice. Salazar, who cashed in Will Wagner and Alex McKenna singles, has hit two home runs in his last two games, following the walk-off clout Friday night.

The Hooks bullpen dispatched 11 Sod Poodles in a row to finish the game. Jojanse Torres worked around a one-out single in the sixth before Jonathan Sprinkle twirled two perfect frames. Derek West then turned in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Corpus Christi, having won eight of its last 10 games, is off Monday before beginning a six-game series in Frisco on Tuesday night.
