Drafted in the 6th round of the 2015 draft, Cease spent the entire 2016 campaign in Eugene where he posted a 2-0 record in 12 regular season starts with a 2.22 ERA and 66 strikeouts compared to 25 walks. The Georgia native held NWL hitters to a .175 average during the regular season.
In the postseason, Cease took the mound for Game One of the Northwest League Championship Series and fired 4.0 scoreless innings with 6 strikeouts while allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks. Cease and the Emeralds would go on to win the NWL Championship over the Everett AquaSox, snapping the organization's 41-year title drought.

Cease was notably included in the 2017 blockbuster deal between the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs that sent he and fellow former Emerald Eloy Jiménez, among others, across town in exchange for pitcher Jose Quintana. Now, he and Jimenez, a strong contender for AL Rookie of the Year, will be reunited at the Major League level.
Cease and the White Sox will face off against the Tigers at 5:10pm PST on Wednesday.
