Cedar Rapids, IA- The Chiefs took advantage of some early walks but the bats were held largely silent in a 4-2 loss Sunday.

Peoria wasted no time getting started in the first inning. Each of the first four batters walked on Sunday to give the Chiefs an early 1-0 cushion. Then, following a strikeout, an Osvaldo Tovalin sac fly made it 2-0.

The Kernels scratched a run in the home half of the first. After the first two men reached, Cedar Rapids had runners stationed at the corners with no one out. Peoria starter Ian Bedell then rolled up a 5-4-3 double play to limit the damage and surrender just the one tally.

In the second, the Chiefs again loaded the bases against Kernels starter Alejandro Hidalgo. Following his sixth walk, Hidalgo was lifted with one out in the inning. Cedar Rapids manager Brian Dinkleman turned to right-hander John Stankiewicz who escaped the jam with a pop out and groundout.

After the Kernels worked a pair of walks in the bottom of the second, Bedell did not allow a baserunner the rest of the way. He allowed just one run over four innings in his third start of the year.

From there, the Peoria offense was quiet. Thomas Francisco’s double in the second was the lone hit of the contest for the Chiefs.

Cedar Rapids took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Tanner Schobel’s two-run double off the left field wall pushed the Kernels in front, 3-2. Schobel then tacked on a key insurance run with a sac fly to make it 4-2.

Gustavo Rodriguez, who gave up the double, was tagged with the loss. Stankiewicz secured the win for the Kernels. Miguel Rodriguez earned the save.

The Chiefs are back in action Tuesday at Dozer Park. Peoria will welcome in the Great Lakes Loons for a six-game series.
