The Syracuse Chiefs split a doubleheader with the Rochester Red Wings, winning 2-1 in game one and then falling 3-2 in game two, on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium. In game one a Clint Robinson home run and Michael Almanzar RBI-single led the Chiefs to victory. In game two, the Chiefs fell at the hands of an RBI-walk drawn by J.B. Shuck against Austin Adams in the top of the seventh inning.
Syracuse (43-68) opened game one with a pair of runs in the second inning versus new Red Wing Dietrich Enns, who was recently acquired in a trade from the Yankees. Clint Robinson led off the inning with his 17th home run of the season, pounding it over the right-center-field fence to put the Chiefs out in front. After a Brandon Snyder groundout, Alejandro De Aza blooped a single into right-center. De Aza stole second and scored on Almanzar's RBI single to put the Chiefs out in front 2-0.
Rochester (64-48) responded in the fifth against Jacob Turner. Niko Goodrum led off the frame with a hustle double into right field. In the next at-bat, with Tommy Field at the plate, Goodrum advanced to third on a passed ball. Field would walk to put runners at the corners with no outs. One batter later, Anthony Recker grounded into a double play which allowed Goodrum to score from third and cut the Chiefs' lead to 2-1.
Turner pitched excellently for the second straight outing, allowing just the one run in six innings. Meanwhile, Wander Suero picked up the save, tossing a scoreless bottom of the ninth to help lead the Chiefs to a game one victory.
In game two the Red Wings got in front first. With Phillips Valdez on the mound in the fourth inning and one out, ByungHo Park singled into center field. Mitch Garver followed with a double down the left-field line, moving Park up to third. One batter later, Leonardo Reginatto singled into right-center field, plating both Park and Garver. Reginatto was thrown out in a rundown on the play, but his two-RBI single gave Rochester a 2-0 lead.
After Irving Falu led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single versus Nik Turley, the game was sent into an one-hour and 43 minute rain delay. When play resumed, the Chiefs cut the lead in half against Drew Rucinski. With two outs, Snyder doubled into the right-center-field alley. He scored on the next play when Spencer Kieboom ripped a double down the right-field line, slicing the Red Wings' lead to 2-1.
The Chiefs knotted the game up in bottom of the sixth. Zach Collier led off the frame with a ringing double into right field. Falu followed with a sacrifice bunt which moved Collier up to third. After the play, Jake Reed came on in relief of Rucinski. Neftali Soto was the first batter that Reed faced and he tied the game by floating a sacrifice fly into right field, scoring Collier from third and tying the game at two.
The Red Wings retook the lead in the seventh against Austin Adams. Garver started the inning with a single into left field. One batter later, Reginatto lined a double into right-center field, moving Garver up to third. After a strikeout, pinch hitter Niko Goodrum drew a walk to load the bases. Adams then walked J.B. Shuck to bring in the go-ahead run, Garver, from third, putting the Wings out in front 3-2.
Syracuse and Rochester continue the series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Chiefs, who will play as the Salt Potatoes for one night only, have not announced their starter. David Hurlbut takes the mound for the Red Wings.
