Augusta Scores Ten Unanswered Runs to Defeat Carolina

ZEBULON, NC: The Augusta GreenJackets (13-11) pulled off their best comeback of the early season against the Carolina Mudcats (13-11) on Thursday night as they scored 10 consecutive runs after falling behind 5-0 early to get back in the series with a 10-5 victory.

The first inning was a tough one for the GreenJackets as the Carolina offense jumped all over them by scoring five times on five hits with the biggest swing coming from Jeferson Quero who blasted a three-run homer to highlight the first inning for Carolina.

But that would be the last time you'd hear from their offense as they were shut down by the Augusta bullpen for the rest of the night. *Estarlin Rodriguez* picked up starter *Landon Leach* in a big way by tossing four shutout innings out of the pen to author his best outing of the season.

He would help Augusta ignite their rally as the GreenJackets got the bats rolling in the third as a two-run home run by Cal Conley got them on the board to make it a 5-2 game, Conley's team-best fourth homer of the season.

*Brandol Mezquita* was next in line as he drove a long double off the top of the wall in left-center to score *Connor Blair* and pull Augusta within two at 5-3.

Mezquita just missed a home run with his double in the fifth, but he would not be denied in the seventh as he crushed a hanger to deep left field and over the wall for a solo bomb to make it a 5-4 game. The rally would follow him as Adam Zebrowski and *Braulio Vasquez* reached base to put the tying and go-ahead runs aboard. With two outs, the GreenJackets needed a big swing and they got a pair of them. First, it was Caleb Durbin who singled back up the middle to score Zebrowski, squaring the game up at 5. Then, it was Brandon Parker who delivered the most important knock of the night with a triple off the wall in right field to plate both Vasquez and Durbin to put Augusta ahead for the first time, 7-5.

For good measure, The GreenJackets scored three more runs in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Adam Zebrowski scoring both Cal Conley and *Brandol Mezquita*, upping the lead to 9-5. And to cap it all off, Zebrowski would score on a wild pitch to give Augusta a 10-5 lead they would not relinquish.

*Juan Mateo* quieted the Mudcats in the sixth and seventh inning while Rob Griswold took over for the eighth and finished the job by putting down six-straight Carolina hitters in order, striking out five of them, concluding an impressive 10-5 win for Augusta.

The bullpen of *Estarlin Rodriguez*, *Juan Mateo*, and Rob Griswold combined to give up no hits after the first inning while allowing only three baserunners on three walks.

The offense was highlighted by Cal Conley and *Brandol Mezquita* who each homered in the game and were both one-hit shy of the cycle. Conley missed it by a single and Mezquita was short a triple. Brandon Parker and Adam Zebrowski both registered two RBIs with Parker getting them on his go-ahead, three-bagger in the seventh, and Zebrowski earned a pair on his two-run double in the eighth as the GreenJackets out-hit the Mudcats, 14-5.

Augusta now looks to even the series on Friday night as *Jordano Perez* makes his GreenJackets debut versus *Alexander Cornielle* for the Mudcats. First pitch comes from Five County Stadium at 7:00 pm.

The third homestand of the season for the Augusta GreenJackets starts off on Tuesday, May 10 against their I-20 rivals the Columbia Fireflies with $2 TWOSDay, First responders night, and Augie's Reading Program with the theme being Pirate Night.
