BILOXI, MS - The Southern League announced Monday that Biloxi Shuckers righty Corbin Burnes has been named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week. In two starts this past week, the 22-year-old pitched 13.0 shutout innings while allowing just nine hits and striking out 11 batters.
Against the Birmingham Barons last Monday, Burnes allowed five hits in six shutout frames while striking out five. The Shuckers beat the Barons 4-1 in 12 innings. Last night in Jacksonville, Burnes scattered four singles over seven clean innings in another no-decision as the Shuckers fell 1-0 in 11 innings.

Burnes has impressed since coming to Biloxi in early June from Advanced-A Carolina. Five of his seven starts for the Shuckers have been scoreless, and he has struck out 43 batters to just six walks in 42.1 innings. His ERA with the Mudcats and Shuckers are virtually identical, with a 1.05 mark in Carolina and a 1.06 mark in Biloxi. His overall ERA of 1.06 is tops among all qualified starters in Minor League Baseball over 17 starts.
This marks the second recognition for Burnes in recent weeks after he was named Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June. He also becomes the second Shucker to win Southern League Pitcher of the Week, as Aaron Wilkerson took home the award on May 21st for a no-hit bid against the Mississippi Braves that lasted until the seventh inning.
The Shuckers look to even up the series on Monday night as they send Wilkerson to the mound to face Mike Kickham. First pitch is at 6:05 pm CT with live coverage beginning at 5:45 pm on Cruisin' WGCM AM-1240/FM-100.9 and the Shuckers Radio Network.
