Down by four runs in the middle innings, the Biloxi Shuckers (69-53, 28-24) produced one of their largest comeback wins of the season with a 6-5 victory over the Mobile BayBears (60-59, 23-28) on Wednesday night at MGM Park.
The BayBears started by tagging RHP Trey Supak for four runs, three earned, over five innings. Zach Houchins provided an RBI double in the first inning to score Jo Adell. Mobile added two more in the second thanks in part to a run-scoring double from Mitch Ghelfi. Fresh off the disabled list, Brendon Sanger cracked a solo home run in the fifth to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Biloxi answered with a run in the fifth that was charged to starter RHP Jeremy Beasley. The righty held the Shuckers scoreless through four innings with seven strikeouts but exited in the fifth after allowing a pair of baserunners. Max McDowell singled in Clint Coulter to start the scoring for the Shuckers.
After the BayBears added another tally in the top of the sixth, Biloxi produced their comeback inning with the first five men reaching base. Keston Hiura reached on an error by Houchins at third followed by a pair of walks issued to Lucas Erceg and Blake Allemand. Coulter then stepped up and smacked a triple down the left field line, scoring all three baserunners to bring Biloxi within a run. Luis Aviles Jr. Jr. plated Coulter to tie the game at five with a bounce out to second.
RHP Jon Olczak (W, 8-3) kept Mobile off the board, stranding a runner in both the seventh and eighth innings to earn his second win in as many nights.
In the bottom of the eighth, Allemand led off with an opposite field single, the second of is two hits. Coulter flied out to left, and Allemand then moved to second when Trent Grisham grounded out to first base for the second out. RHP Zac Ryan (L, 1-4) plunked McDowell to put runners at the corners. With Aviles Jr. at the plate, Ryan attempted a pickoff at first base but sailed the ball into foul territory, allowing Allemand to scoot home as the go-ahead run.
RHP Nate Griep (S, 29) locked down his league-leading 29th save of the season in the ninth without allowing a hit. The four-run comeback for Biloxi ties their largest of the season, a feat they have now accomplished five times in 2018.
On a Double Play Thursday, the Shuckers and BayBears will battle at 6:35 PM CT. RHP Conor Harber (0-0, 0.00) will make his home debut for the Shuckers, while Mobile's starter is TBA. Fans can enjoy $2 Yuengling, $2 hot dogs, $2 fountain sodas and $3 weekly draft beer specials.
