PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (July 18, 2017) - In conjunction with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Charlotte Stone Crabs announced four roster moves Tuesday:
SS Jake Cronenworth has been promoted from Charlotte to Double-A Montgomery.
RHP Drew Smith has been promoted from Charlotte to Double-A Montgomery.
INF Alec Sole has been assigned to Charlotte from Triple-A Durham.
RHP Jaime Schultz has been assigned to Charlotte from the GCL Rays.
An All-Star in all three of his Minor League seasons, Cronenworth leads the Stone Crabs in games played (86) and walks (47), batting .270 with 23 extra-base hits and 29 RBI. A former two-way star at the University of Michigan, Cronenworth hit in the top third of Charlotte's batting order in 79 of his 81 starts. The St. Clair, Mich. native logged 121 games over two seasons as a Stone Crab after being promoted from Bowling Green on July 20, 2016. Cronenworth will finish tied for eighth in Stone Crabs' single-season history in both runs scored (58) and walks.
Smith, meanwhile, places second in the Florida State League in both walks per nine innings (1.79) and fewest baserunners per nine innings (8.70) amongst relievers. The Dallas Baptist product posted a 2.20 ERA over 28.2 innings out of the Stone Crabs' bullpen, striking out 28 while walking only five. A former third round pick in 2015, Smith was acquired from the Detroit Tigers on April 28 as the player-to-be-named later in the Mikie Mahtook trade. Ranking fourth in the Rays' organization in saves (7), Smith is tabbed as the club's No. 29 prospect.
Sole returns to Port Charlotte for his third stint with the Stone Crabs. A native of Holbrook, N.Y., Sole has played in 51 games between the organization's three highest levels in 2017. The former St. Louis University Billiken hit .281 with 22 extra-base hits and 36 RBI over 89 games for Charlotte in 2016, the best average amongst all players with at least 200 at bats.
Schultz is working his way back from a groin injury which cost him the first half of his 2017 season. The righty from Albany, N.Y. made three shutout appearances with the GCL Rays before being assigned to Charlotte. Schultz led the International League in strikeouts (163) in 2016, going 5-7 with a 3.58 ERA over 27 starts.
