Cubs Snap Loons Four-Game Winning Streak, Win 6-2

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Great Lakes Loons (62-46) (26-18) dropped their first game of the series against the South Bend Cubs (64-44) (25-21) 6-2 on a 79-degree partly cloudy Friday night at Dow Diamond.

- The Loons committed three errors, two accounted for three Cubs runs. South Bend scored four runs in the third inning. An error at shortstop, catcher’s interference and walk delivered the tallies. Great Lakes starter Will Gagnon in his High-A debut struck out seven. The only RBI hit was a solo home run from Angel Cepeda in the first inning.

- Great Lakes had four hits through the eight innings. Eduardo Guerrero had two knocks and stole second base in the second inning.

- Matt Lanzendorfer tossed two innings and permitted just one run. Michael Hallquist was the lone guy to reach, a two-out solo shot in the sixth. Robby Porco and Seamus Barrett combined for the final three innings.

- The Loons tallied two runs in the ninth and had the potential tying run come up to the plate. Eduardo Quintero led off the inning with a single, his third reach of the night. Jaron Elkins and Eduardo Guerrero each walked, to load the bases.

- In the bottom of the ninth, Mairo Martinus pushed a run across with a 106-mph RBI single. Victor Rodrigues on a four-pitch walk made it 6-2. Adam Stone who permitted the walk, struck out the next batter to close the contest.

Rounding Things Out

West Michigan was victorious tonight. The Whitecaps and the Loons are tied for first in the Midwest League East Division second half standings.
