Cummings Continues Hot Streak as Missions Drop Game Two in Midland

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Missions continued their six-game series with the Midland RockHounds on Wednesday night. After trailing 3-0, the Missions offense battled back with a three-run fourth inning. In what became a battle of the bullpens, Midland prevailed with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The RockHounds evened up the series with a 5-3 victory.
Jack Perkins was the starting pitcher for the RockHounds. The right-hander did not face any trouble until the top of the third inning. With one man down, Ripken Reyes singled and stole second base. After striking out the next batter and walking Jakob Marsee, a wild pitch allowed Reyes to move to third base. Jackson Merrill flew out to leave both runners on base.
Robby Snelling was the starting pitcher for the Missions. The southpaw retired the first six batters he faced but allowed three runs on four hits in the third inning. Caeden Trenkle began the frame with a triple. After retiring the next batter, Trenkle scored on a double from Sahid Valenzuela. Valenzuela was thrown out trying to stretch his double to a triple. Cooper Bowman reached base on a throwing error from Graham Pauley. Max Muncy drove in Bowman with a double to right field. Lastly, Shane McGuire singled to center field and drove in Muncy. The RockHounds took a 3-0 lead.
San Antonio bounced back and evened the score in the top of the fourth inning. Pauley began the inning with a base hit and Nathan Martorella reached on a fielder’s choice. Marcos Castanon drove in Pauley with a base hit to left field. Perkins loaded the bases after walking Michael De La Cruz. Cole Cummings was hit by a pitch and Martorella came in to score. Reyes grounded into a double play and Castanon scored the tying run.
Midland threatened to regain the lead in the fourth inning. Daniel Susac drew a walk to start the frame. Snelling struck out the next batter before giving up a double to Trenkle. Jonny Butler was walked and Midland had the bases loaded with one out. Cameron Masterman, pinch-hitting for Valenzuela, struck out looking for the second out. Luke Montz decided Snelling’s night was over and Henry Henry took the mound. Cooper Bowman flew out to end the inning.
The Missions had a chance to capture the lead in the seventh inning. Cummings began the frame with a double off Perkins. Calvin Coker took over on the mound. The right-hander allowed a single to Reyes to put runners on the corners. Korry Howell drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Marsee popped out to shortstop for the first out of the inning. Merrill flew out to center field. On the play, Cummings was thrown out at home trying to score from third.
The RockHounds regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Facing Daniel Camarena, Muncy singled with two outs to keep the inning alive. After allowing a base hit to McGuire, Lazaro Armenteros drove in Muncy with a single to center field. On the play, a throwing error from Marsee allowed a second run to score. Midland took a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the ninth inning, Tyler Baum entered the game for Midland looking for the save attempt. Cummings struck out swinging to start the frame. Reyes grounded out for the second out. Howell flew out to end the game.
