South Bend, Ind.—Bren Spillane drove in three runs and Michael Siani reached base four times to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 5-2 victory over the South Bend Cubs on Thursday night. The Dragons have won two of the first three games in the six-game series.
All nine starters in the Dragons batting order had at least one hit as part of a 12-hit attack. The hit total was only one short of the Dragons season high of 13 set in the first game of the season on May 4 at Great Lakes.
The Dragons scored four runs in the top of the first inning, matching their total of first inning runs from the first 14 games combined. Spillane and Miguel Hernandez both delivered two-run singles in the inning to put the Dragons in front, 4-0.
South Bend scored one run in the bottom of the first and another in the fourth to cut the Dayton lead to 4-2. The Dragons added a run in the seventh when Spillane singled to left with the bases loaded to bring in Quincy McAfee to make it 5-2 and close out the scoring.
The victory was credited to the second Dayton pitcher of the night, Jacques Pucheu (1-0), who tossed two and two-thirds scoreless innings. Eddy Demurias recorded the final five outs to earn his second save. The Dragons bullpen trio of Pucheu, Braxton Roxby, and Demurias combined for five and two-thirds scoreless innings after starter Spencer Stockton worked the first three and one-third innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Spillane, Siani, and McAfee each had two hits for Dayton. Brian Rey was 1 for 5 to extend his hitting streak to 13 straight games (every game Rey has played in this season).
The win lifted the Dragons (10-5) back into a first place tie with Lake County, who lost to Great Lakes on Thursday night.
The Dragons meet the Cubs (5-9) in South Bend on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The Dragons will try to climb to six games above the .500 mark for the first time this season. Lyon Richardson (1-0, 1.35) will start for the Dragons against South Bend’s Ryan Jensen (0-1, 6.43). The game can be heard on radio on WONE 980 AM or via the Dragons Mobile App.
Notes: The Dragons stole four bases in the game including one by Siani, who moved into a tie for the team lead with Quin Cotton and Jacob Hurtubise, each with five…In the fifth inning, Dragons catcher Jose Tello was replaced in the middle of an at-bat by James Free after Tello aggravated what appeared to be a wrist or hand injury on a swing.
