The Staten Island Yankees (36-19) won their tenth straight game with a 4-0 victory over the Connecticut Tigers (24-28). The Baby Bombers were led to victory once again by their dominating pitching as
In his last start, De Paula left the game after throwing six no-hit shutout innings. On Thursday, De Paula continued with that groove as the Connecticut Tigers struggled mightily to get a hit off him. After falling behind some hitters in the opening inning and a second inning walk, De Paula retired the next 18 batters he faced.
"He was electric today," said Staten Island manager Julio Mosquera. "The first two innings he started a little bit slow, but then he just took his time, went out there, and started attacking the hitters."
De Paula would finish the day with seven shutout innings and a season-high total in strikeouts with seven. He only allowed one hit and walked only one batter as well. Although De Paula has looked impressive all year long, he has looked incredible in his last two starts.
"He used his elevated fast ball tonight," said Staten Island pitching coach Travis Phelps. "It was very effective against these hitters. They didn't seem to be able to catch up with it, and they couldn't put it in play with any authority."
The first hit De Paula gave up did not come until the seventh inning with two outs when a triple was ripped into left field just out of reach of
"I just keep working," said De Paula as translated through Mosquera. "I felt pretty good, thank God, because in the first couple innings I wasn't feeling as good. But I made adjustments."
The Yankees coaching staff is noticing growing confidence in their pitching staff, especially when it comes to De Paula.
"There's been maturity every time he goes out there," Phelps added. "He's maturing each time, and we're seeing that. He's got a great attitude, he's eager to learn, and every time he goes out there, he learns something different."
The offense Thursday night came mostly through the bat of Kendall Coleman who finished the night with three RBIs. He hit a sacrifice fly in the second to score
The Baby Bombers face off against the Tigers again Friday night as they go for another series sweep and their 11th straight win.
