Delgado Records Another Multi-Hit Effort In Thursday Afternoon Defeat

Teng Ties Season High With Three Strikeouts In Relief

Raynel Delgado extended his RBI streak to five games, but the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (26-10, 58-52) dropped their second- straight contest to the Albuquerque Isotopes (18-18, 57-54), falling 5-3 on Thursday afternoon at Isotopes Park.

After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Albuquerque broke through in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Connor Norby launched his second home run of the series to give the Isotopes a 1-0 lead.

The Isotopes added to their advantage in the fourth inning. A leadoff home run, a walk and a triple pushed Albuquerque's lead to 3-0. The Isotopes struck for another run in the fifth after Zac Veen singled, stole second base and scored on a throwing error to push Albuquerque to a 4-0 lead .

RHP Ryan Weiss provided solid relief for Sugar Land, tossing 2.1 innings while allowing one unearned run on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. RHP Kai-Wei Teng followed with 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one run while tying his season high with Sugar Land by striking out three.

The Space Cowboys mounted a rally in the top of the eighth. Marcus Brown singled before Cavan Biggio was hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. Delgado then lined an RBI double to right field for Sugar Land's first run of the afternoon. Joey Loperfido followed with an RBI groundout before Shay Whitcomb lifted a sacrifice fly to left, trimming the deficit to 4-3.

Albuquerque added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. After a hit batter put a runner aboard, an RBI triple from Drew Avans extended the Isotopes' lead to 5-3.

Sugar Land brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after a leadoff walk, but a strikeout and game-ending double play closed out the afternoon as the Space Cowboys dropped back-to-back games for the first time since July 25-26.

NOTABLE:

  • Raynel Delgado went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored on Thursday afternoon, extending his hitting streak to six games and his RBI streak to five games. Over his last six games, Delgado is batting .440 (11-for-25) with four doubles, a triple, seven RBI, two walks and four runs scored.
  • Joey Loperfido drove in a run and drew a walk on Thursday afternoon. Loperfido has now reached base safely in all three games of the series, going 3-for-10 with two RBI, three walks and a run scored against Albuquerque this week.
  • Marcus Brown went 1-for-3 with a run scored on Thursday afternoon. Brown has collected a hit in three of his first five games with Sugar Land. Since being transferred from Corpus Christi on July 20, Brown is batting .308 (4-for-13) with a double and a run scored.
  • Cavan Biggio was hit by a pitch for the eighth time this season on Thursday afternoon, moving into a tie for sixth in the Pacific Coast League in hit-by-pitches.
  • RHP Kai-Wei Teng made his fourth appearance with the Space Cowboys on Thursday afternoon, striking out three batters over 1.2 innings. Teng’s three strikeouts tied his season-high with Sugar Land, a mark which he has reached in each of his last three appearances.

Looking to even the series, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys continue their matchup against the Albuquerque Isotopes on Friday night. RHP Jackson Nezuh is slated to start for Sugar Land, while RHP Keegan Thompson gets the nod for Albuquerque. First pitch is set for 7:35 pm CT.
