Amparo's Clutch Eighth Inning Hit Helps the Shorebirds End Losing Streak
SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (43-81, 20-38) snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Fredericksburg Nationals (73-50, 27-30) on Friday.
The Shorebirds quickly took the lead and ended a 25-inning scoreless streak with a first-inning sacrifice fly from Carlos Sanchez, the first RBI of his pro career, making it 1-0.
It stayed 1-0 into the fifth until Fredericksburg tied it on an RBI double by Avery Ortiz. A sacrifice fly from Manuel Cabrera gave the Fred Nats their first lead at 2-1.
Brayan Orrantia put together another strong appearance out of the bullpen, dealing 4.2 innings, allowing two runs, with five strikeouts and two walks.
In the seventh, the Shorebirds tied the game on a wild pitch when Joshua Liranzo crossed home plate, making it 2-2.
In the eighth, Félix Amparo delivered the biggest hit of the night for Delmarva with a go-ahead RBI single that scored Ty Head, putting Delmarva back in front 3-2. An insurance run came home on a sacrifice bunt by Hector Campusano, as Jimmy Anderson scored on the play to give the Shorebirds a 4-2 advantage.
Fredericksburg put the pressure on Delmarva in the final inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Andrew Herbert induced a game-ending groundout from Coy James to secure a 4-2 win for Delmarva.
Andrew Herbert (6-3) recorded the final ten outs and allowed no runs, earning the win for Delmarva. Adam Boucher (0-1) took the loss for the Fred Nats.
Delmarva goes for a second straight win on Saturday, with Collin McKinney making his home debut against Marlon De La Cruz for Fredericksburg. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
