Despite Six Double Effort, Space Cowboys Fall On Friday

Even though they connected for six doubles in the first three innings, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (34-21, 66-63) fell 11-3 to the Las Vegas Aviators (31-24, 74-53) on Friday night at Las Vegas Ballpark. For a third time in four games, the Space Cowboys scored in the opening inning.

For a third time in four games, the Space Cowboys scored in the opening inning. Pascanel Ferreras knocked his 19th double of the season with one out in the frame before Joey Loperfido followed with an RBI double off the right field wall, giving Sugar Land an early 1-0 lead.

The Aviators captured the lead in the bottom of the second. After a walk put a runner on, an infield single and a two-base throwing error allowed a run to score, and an RBI single from Luke Mann gave Vegas a 2-1 lead. Jack Winkler followed with a single to put two runners on before another throwing error permitted two more runs to score, extending the Aviators’ advantage to 4-1.

The Space Cowboys put together a rally of their own in the top of the third. With two outs, Loperfido laced his second double of the night before Cavan Biggio worked a walk to put two runners on. Jake Meyers then lined his fifth double of the season to left field, bringing home both runners and cutting the Space Cowboys’ deficit to 4-3.

However, the Aviators used a two-out rally in the bottom of the third to score another run and added two more two-out runs in the bottom of the fifth to push their advantage to 7-3. The Space Cowboys were held off the board for the remainder of the contest, and Las Vegas struck for four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, widening their lead to 11-3. CĂ©sar Salazar appeared as a position player pitching in the eighth, and after allowing a lead-off double, recorded his first professional strikeout as he retired the next three in order to fire a scoreless eighth inning.

NOTABLE:

  • Pascanel Ferreras laced his 19th double of the season on Friday night, part of a 2-for-3 night for the shortstop. Since making his Space Cowboys debut on June 2, Ferreras is tied for third in the Pacific Coast League with 19 doubles and leads all Space Cowboys batters in doubles over that span.
  • Joey Loperfido went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored on Friday night. In four games against the Aviators this week, Loperfido is 8-for-19 (.421) with three doubles, seven RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Cavan Biggio went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored on Friday night, extending his on-base streak to nine games and his hitting streak to four games. Biggio has also drawn a walk in eight consecutive games, the longest active walk streak in the PCL.
  • Sugar Land recorded six doubles on Friday night, tied for the most doubles in a single game this season. The Space Cowboys previously recorded six doubles on June 17 at Albuquerque and June 3 at El Paso.

Sugar Land continues their six-game set against the Aviators on Saturday night. RHP Jackson Nezuh will toe the slab while Las Vegas is scheduled to throw RHP Mason Barnett for a 9:05 pm CT first pitch.
