Dragons Pitcher Julian Aguiar Wins Two Major Monthly Awards

DAYTON, OHIO—Dayton Dragons starting pitcher Julian Aguiar (AG-ee-arr) has received two major awards. Aguiar has been named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Month and the Cincinnati Reds Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May.

Aguiar becomes the second Dragons player to win a monthly award from both the league and the Reds organization this season. Dragons outfielder Blake Dunn was selected as the MWL Player of the Month and Reds Minor League Player of the Month for April. Aguiar becomes the seventh Dragons player since 2005 to win a MWL monthly award.

Aguiar allowed only one earned run in May covering 22 innings for an earned run average of 0.41. For the month, he went 2-0 in four starts, allowing just seven hits (no extra base hits) with four walks and 23 strikeouts, posting an opponent’s batting average of .099. Opponents went 7 for 71 against him. Aguiar did not allow more than two hits in any of his four starts in May. For the year, Aguiar leads the MWL in ERA (2.03) and opponent batting average (.154) while ranking seventh in strikeouts.

Previous Dragons winners of monthly league awards included Brian O’Grady (Player of the Month, June, 2015), Tyler Mahle (Pitcher of the Month, July, 2015), Jose Siri (Player of the Month, July, 2017), James Marinan (Pitcher of the Month, September, 2021), Joe Boyle (Pitcher of the Month, May, 2022), and Blake Dunn (Player of the Month, April, 2023).

Aguiar is a native of Long Beach, California. He was selected by the Reds in the 12th round of the 2021 draft out of Cypress College in California. He turned 22 years old on Sunday.
