The Tri-City Dust Devils (3-7 2H, 32-41) had their Fourth of July festivities spoiled by the Spokane Indians (4-5 2H, 38-35) Monday night, as Julio Carreras hit a 3-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to push Spokane past Tri-City 8-7 at Avista Stadium.
The Dust Devils led 7-5 coming to the bottom of the 9th, thanks in large part to Steven Rivas’s best night as a professional. The outfielder from Rancho Cucamonga, California drove in a career-high five runs, going 3 for 5 with a home run and a double.
All three of Rivas’s hits drove in runs with two out. The first, a two-run double to left-center in the 3rd inning, plated Gabe Matthews and Mitch Nay, who both drew walks to extend the inning. The double, which gave Tri-City a 3-1 lead, came an inning after Mike Peabody singled in Straton Podaras for the visitors’ opening run of the night.
The second, a home run rocketed out over the train car past the right field fence, pushed the lead to 4-2. It was Rivas’s fourth home run of 2022.
The third hit, a two-run single to left in the 7th that scored Jose Guzman and Osmy Gregorio, gave the Dust Devils the lead back at 6-5.
Edwin Yon added a solo home run in the 8th inning, slicing a drive just inside the pole down the right field line to give Tri-City the 7-5 lead they held to the 9th.
Dakota Donovan (2-2) got the loss, giving up the walk-off home run in the 9th. Spokane’s Blake Goldsberry (1-0) got the win, going 1.2 scoreless innings late in the game.
Offensively, Rivas, Gregorio, Guzman and D’Shawn Knowles had multi-hit games. Gregorio now has a six-game hitting streak, and Matthews’ two walks extended his on-base streak to 29 games.
The Dust Devils and Indians will take Tuesday off due to playing on the holiday Monday, continuing their series at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday night at Avista Stadium. Landon Marceaux will get the start for Tri-City, with Mike Ruff countering for Spokane.
Wednesday night’s game broadcast begins at 6:20 p.m. with the King Beverage Budweiser Pregame Show. You can tune in at dustdevilsbaseball.com and on the MiLB First Pitch app.
