Despite putting up a crooked number in the first inning, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (33-42) were defeated 11-5 by the Salt Lake Bees (37-37) on Sunday afternoon at Smith’s Ballpark.

Sugar Land jumped out to an early lead off LHP Kenny Rosenberg (W, 5-4) in the first. David Hensley worked a lead-off walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Jon Singleton ripped a double to right, easily scoring Hensley to make it 1-0 Space Cowboys. A single from Korey Lee plated Singleton, and after the Space Cowboys’ catcher stole second, Pedro León singled to left, driving in Lee to put Sugar Land up 3-0 before the Bees came to hit.

RHP Jairo Solis (L, 1-2) got the start for the Space Cowboys and allowed three runs in the first on a hit batter, three walks and a two-RBI single from Jack Lopez. The Bees would take the lead in the bottom of the second on a pair of RBI hits, opening up a 6-3 advantage after two frames.

The Space Cowboys worked a pair of walks against Rosenberg in the third but left both runners on base without scoring. It appeared Sugar Land would get back at least one in the fifth when Quincy Hamilton and Singleton both singled but a flyout to deep center by Lee ended the rally.

Salt Lake added on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth and one run in the last of the seventh. Sugar Land was able to get a run in the top of the sixth on a single by León, a hit by pitch of César Salazar and an opposite-field single by Marty Costes. The final run of the game scored for the Space Cowboys in the top of the eighth when León doubled and raced in to score on a wild pitch, but the Space Cowboys were limited to just four hits in the final four frames.

Following a pair of off days on Monday and Tuesday, the Space Cowboys begin the second half of the Pacific Coast League season with a six-game set against the Oklahoma City Dodgers starting on Wednesday at Constellation Field. Neither team has named a starter for a 7:05 pm first pitch. The game can be heard on ESPN 92.5 FM or online here and seen on MiLB.TV.
