Early Offense Not Enough in Game One

Clippers and RailRiders Go Back and Forth, but Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Pulls Away Late

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders defeated the Columbus Clippers thanks to a three-run eighth inning tonight at Huntington Park.The teams went back and forth until then, with the RailRiders pulling away to take game one of the four-game set, 7-3.

The Clippers got out to an early lead with three extra base hits in the first. After Drew Maggi led off with a double against RailRiders' starter Erik Swanson, Yu Chang hammered a triple to right-center under the glove of diving centerfielder Clint Frazier to score him. Eric Haase followed with a double off the right field wall, scoring Chang to give Columbus a 2-0 lead.
The RailRiders clapped back, tying the ballgame in the top of the second after they loaded the bases against Clippers' right hander Shane Bieber. Francisco Diaz scored two with a sharp single before Bieber escaped the jam, knotting things at 2-2.
Bieber, down from Cleveland on a limited pitch count, was done after the third. He gave up two runs on three hits, while walking one and striking out five.
In his second rehab appearance since hitting the Major League DL on May 26, Andrew Miller came on in the fourth and allowed a go-ahead leadoff solo shot to Mike Ford. He retired three straight after that, striking out the last man he faced.
Haase bailed out Miller in the home half of the fourth with a first-pitch homerun to left to lead off the inning. The game-tying blast was Haase's team-leading 13th this year.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre picked up the offense again in the fifth, putting two men on against new Clippers' pitcher Mitch Talbot. Brandon Drury came to the plate and singled in Shane Robinson to retake the lead at 4-3.
The RailRiders tacked on three more, first on a Talbot wild pitch with one out in the eighth. After that, Rey Navarro stroked a two-run homerun over the right field to extend his squad's lead to 7-3.
The Clippers went down quietly after that, dropping the series opener.
The teams will be back at it tomorrow night, with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. at Huntington Park.
