Echedry Vargas Makes History as Jupiter Falls 2-1 to Tampa in Five Innings

JUPITER, FL – The Jupiter Hammerheads (23-31; 60-60) dropped game two of six to the Tampa Tarpons (34-19; 70-49) by a final score of 2-1 on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in a rain-shortened five innings.
The Tarpons scored the first run in the top of the first inning against Jupiter’s starting pitcher Manuel Genao (L, 4-5). After a walk and a single with one out, Bear Harrison hit an RBI single to center field to put Tampa ahead 1-0.
Jupiter made history as the Hammerheads provided an immediate response in the bottom of the first inning off of Tampa starting pitcher Tyler Boudreau (W, 7-3). With two outs, Echedry Vargas blasted a solo home run to left field to even the game at 1-1. It was the 25th home run of the year for Vargas which broke the Hammerheads’ single-season home run record set by Marcell Ozuna in 2012.

After a scoreless second inning, the Tarpons regained the lead in the top of the third. With one out and runners at first and third base, Harrison delivered a sacrifice fly to score Dax Kilby to give Tampa a 2-1 lead.
Genao settled into his start with five innings pitched and allowed two runs on four hits, four walks, and struck out five batters. However, Boudreau held the Jupiter offense to just the one run on one hit provided by Vargas as he completed five innings.
After five completed innings, the rain came crashing down in Jupiter, accompanied by lightning, and the field was deemed unplayable to continue. In five innings, the Hammerheads fell by the 2-1 final score on Wednesday night.
