Eight Great for Dust Devils in Series-Opening Win over AquaSox

PASCO – An 8-run bottom of the 2nd inning provided the bulk of Tuesday’s offense for the Tri-City Dust Devils (22-27 2H, 57-58), who raced out to a big lead and then hung on late for a 12-9 win over the Everett AquaSox (25-24 2H, 58-57) at Gesa Stadium to open their six-game set.
Tri-City led 2-1 through an inning, getting an RBI double from CF Hayden Alvarez with him later scoring on a double play grounder. Then the 2nd happened, which saw the Dust Devils send 13 men to the plate. DH David Mershon (walk), C Peter Burns (single) and LF Kevyn Castillo (walk) all reached to begin the inning. 2B Capri Ortiz and RF Jorge Ruiz then followed with two-run singles off Everett starter Adam Maier (7-4), pushing the lead to 6-1. Ruiz later scored on an outfield error to make it 7-1, and SS Kendrey Maduro capped the inning with a three-run homer to left center that gave Tri-City a 10-1 lead.
An 11th run went up in the bottom of the 4th. Substitute DH Slate Alford drew a one-out walk in his first plate appearance of the night, and a groundout got him to second. Castillo then looped a ball down in center field for an RBI single as Alford scored to send the score to 11-4. Maduro added a 456-foot solo home run to left-center in the bottom of the 8th, putting up the last run of the night for the Dust Devils.
The AquaSox kept chipping away at the deficit, getting three in the 4th inning off reliever Zach Redner (4-3) and pushing another three across in the 6th to move within four at 11-7. A two-run top of the 9th put Tri-City up against it, but closer Sam Tookoian got the final out with the bases loaded to preserve the victory and get his 15th save.
DUST DEVILS NOTES
-Every Dust Devil scored at least one run, including Slate Alford after his entrance in the 4th inning. Kendrey Maduro and Jorge Ruiz both scored twice, with Maduro jogging for both tallies on his two-homer night.
-Tri-City starter Jose Atencio made his return to the Dust Devils rotation Tuesday night after spending 10 days with Triple-A Salt Lake. The righty gave up one run in three innings of work, giving up three hits but striking out three.
-Tuesday night in the Northwest League saw the Vancouver Canadians double up the Eugene Emeralds 10-5 at PK Park, extending their lead in the playoff race to three games over Everett. At Avista Stadium the Spokane Indians came back from down 10-2 to beat the Hillsboro Hops 12-10, using two five-run innings to catapult past the visitors for the win.

Tri-City and Everett take on game two of their six-game series at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night at Gesa Stadium. Tropical vibes and special concessions will help mark Hawaiian Wednesday, with fans encouraged to wear island gear to the ballpark. Right-hander Dylan Jordan (0-1, 12.86 ERA) gets the start for the Dust Devils, with righty Taylor Dollard (5-8, 5.76 ERA) doing the same for the AquaSox.
