Eight Run Tenth Inning Carries Scrappers over Doubledays

Auburn, NY- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Auburn Doubledays played an instant classic on Thursday night at Falcon Park. The Scrappers and Doubledays played a back and forth game that saw eight lead changes. The Scrappers would eventually pull away with an eight run tenth inning which saw 12 come to the plate. In the end the Scrappers would top the Doubledays 15-7.   
            The Scrappers for the second straight night would jump out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Ernie Clement would score the first run of the game on a wild pitch after reaching on an error start the game. With one out and runners at first and second, Simeon Lucas delivered an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Will Benson would then push the Scrappers lead to 3-0 with a two out RBI single. 
            In the bottom of the first inning the Doubledays would strike back for three runs with all the runs coming on two homeruns.    
            After the first inning both teams would trade runs and the lead over the next eight innings, leading to extra innings.
            In the top of the tenth inning, the Scrappers took command for good. Mahoning Valley sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs. The eventual winning run would come just two batters into the inning. Oscar Gonzalez doubled to start the inning and then scored on a Simeon Lucas RBI single. With one out and one on, Will Benson connected on a two run homerun to push the Scrappers lead out to 10-7. Lucas would collect another RBI in the inning and he and Benson would finish the night with four. When the inning concluded the Scrappers held a 15-7 lead.
            The offensive onslaught for the Scrappers included 15 runs and 24 hits. The Scrappers had six extra base hits (four doubles, one triple and a homerun).
            Kirk McCarty started but last just 0.2 of an inning. He allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits. McCarty walked one and struck out one. Jean Carlos Mejía followed with 2.1 innings of relief. Mejia struck out three and did not allow a hit or a run. Kyle Nelson went 2.1 innings in relief. He allowed two earned runs on six hits. Nelson walked two and struck out one. Domingo Jimenez would also work 2.1 innings in relief. He allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out two. Ping-Hsueh Chen (1-0) earned the win in 2.1 innings of work. Chen did not allow a batter to reach base. He did not record a strikeout.  
            In the win, Ernie Clement extended his hitting streak to 16 straight games and is now just one shy of the NYPL's longest streak of the season. With the win the Scrappers are also once again tied with State Island for the best record in the league.      
  The Scrappers will go for their 10^th series win of the season on Friday night. James Karinchak will get the start. First pitch is set for 7:05. The Scrappers return home on Saturday night.
