En las últimas tres temporadas, Valera ha jugado para cinco equipos Triple-A, tres equipos de Grandes Ligas y los Bravos de Margarita en la Liga de Invierno de Venezuela. Desde que llegó a los RailRiders por un reclamo de exención el 12 de mayo, el bateador de turnos ha encontrado un hogar en la organización de los Yankees y ha florecido como jugador.
"No solo estoy feliz, sino que también disfruto de las cosas", dice Valera de sus primeras semanas en la organización de los Yankees. "[La sensación de ser intercambiado] es un poco difícil de describir. Es una de esas cosas que es difícil de entender. "Llegar a una nueva organización y poder hacer que la transición sea fácil para estar alrededor de un buen cuerpo de entrenadores y tener entrenadores de bateo con los que puedo comunicarme e ir de un lado a otro es excelente".
La facilidad de transición a una nueva organización permitió a Valera elevarse en sus primeras semanas en las telas a rayas de Scranton / Wilkes-Barre. Tuvo un comienzo tórrido en el plato y todavía no se ha enfriado. Pero la parte sorprendente del juego de Breyvic no ha sido su estupendo promedio de bateo, rondando la marca de .400, sino el poder que le ha proporcionado hasta la mitad de la alineación de los RailRiders.
Después de batear solo 24 jonrones en 3,127 turnos al bate en su carrera antes de unirse a los RailRiders, Valera aplastó a seis jugadores en sus primeros 39 turnos al bate con los Baby Bombers. Su aumento de poder lo llevó a ser seleccionado como el Jugador de la Semana de la Liga Internacional el 27 de mayo, convirtiéndose en el primer jugador de SWB en ganar un honor semanal en 2019.
Valera atribuye su éxito temprano con los RailRiders a su trabajo con el entrenador de Hitting Phil Plantier. El ex bateador de Grandes Ligas ha subrayado repetidamente su fe en la capacidad de Breyvic para ser un bateador de élite.
"Phil me hizo consciente de que he sido un gran bateador a lo largo de mi carrera, pero quiere que enfatice quedarme más atrás en mi postura y poder elegir ciertos lugares para impulsar la pelota un poco más", dice Valera de Su trabajo los RailRiders golpeando al guru. "Ese ha sido el ajuste principal en lo que respecta a mi enfoque de bateo, pero aparte de eso, en su mayoría me mantuvo igual en lo que he estado haciendo".
Lo que Plantier sabía era que Valera era un bateador de .300 en las ligas menores, y tenía suficiente pop en su bate que un enfoque diferente en el plato podría ayudar a destrabar. El resultado ha sido un sorprendente golpe de poder que Valera nunca ha experimentado.
"Estoy muy consciente de mi poder y de lo que he hecho en el pasado, y de una manera me ha tomado con la guardia baja y me ha sorprendido", dice Breyvic con una leve carcajada.
Si bien Valera, que emerge como un legítimo bate de poder de nivel medio, parece inesperado, estadísticamente se ha estado desarrollando durante algunas temporadas. Después de batear un total de seis jonrones en los primeros siete años de su carrera, irrumpió en escena en 2017 con los Memphis Redbirds, el afiliado Triple-A de los Cardenales de San Luis.
Después de ser firmado como agente libre internacional por San Luis en 2010, el nativo de Montalbán, Venezuela, se abrió camino en la escala organizativa con una gran defensa en la segunda base y siendo un bateador de alto contacto. Fue nombrado para un puñado de listas de prospectos Top 30 organizacionales, pero nunca fue considerado uno de los mejores bateadores de la organización.
En su primer año en Memphis, Valera descubrió su golpe de poder en el plato. Marcó máximos en su carrera en dobles (22), triples (6) y jonrones (8). Esa actuación, junto con su promedio de bateo de .314 en esa temporada, le valió una convocatoria de septiembre a las ligas mayores.
Solo jugó en cinco partidos con los Cardenales, recogiendo su único golpe el 7 de septiembre, un sencillo hit contra Craig Stammen de los Padres de San Diego. Los Cardenales se desviaron hacia un tercer puesto en la Central de la Liga Nacional, pero las perspectivas de Valera de un 2018 prometedor se veían brillantes.
Desafortunadamente para Breyvic, el 2018 dio un giro el 28 de marzo cuando los Cardenales lo designaron para la asignación y tres días más tarde lo intercambiaron con los Dodgers de Los Angeles, quienes lo asignaron a Triple-A Oklahoma City. Golpeó bien para OKC, incluyendo un tramo desde el 22 al 24 de mayo cuando conectó un jonrón en tres juegos consecutivos en su antiguo club en Memphis.
Su buen inicio le valió otra convocatoria de Grandes Ligas a los Dodgers, donde jugó en 20 competencias, pero solo bateó para .172 en cuatro períodos separados en las mayores en abril, mayo y junio. A medida que se acercaba la fecha límite de intercambio sin exención a fines de julio, el nombre de Breyvic apareció en varios posibles acuerdos.
Tratando de apuntalar la posición de campocorto después de perder a Corey Seager en la temporada, los Dodgers hicieron un cambio de fecha límite, cambiando al superestrella Manny Machado de los Orioles de Baltimore. La adquisición del éxito de taquilla tuvo un costo elevado, ya que LA envió a cinco jugadores a cambio de los Orioles, incluyendo a Valera.
[1] [2] Breyvic estuvo arriba y abajo entre Baltimore y Triple-A Norfolk durante el resto de la temporada, e incluso bateó para .286 en su estadía de 12 juegos en el show, registrando su primer hit extra base de la carrera, un triple, en el camino. En total, estableció otra carrera en jonrones en una temporada, con nueve entre todas sus paradas.
"Una de las cosas que continué diciéndome a mí mismo a medida que me movía es: 'Organización diferente, mismo objetivo'", dice Valera sobre cómo se adaptó durante esta temporada alucinante. "No importa dónde esté, voy a competir y daré el 100% y daré todo de mí".
Durante la mayor parte de la temporada baja, parecía que el movimiento constante era para Valera, pero el 5 de enero, los Orioles intercambiaron a Valera con los Gigantes de San Francisco por dinero en efectivo. Comenzó la temporada con Triple-A Sacramento, pero después de alcanzar .257 en 24 juegos, fue designado por los Gigantes para su asignación el 5 de mayo.
Siete días más tarde, los Yankees lo reclamaron de renuncia y lo asignaron a los RailRiders, donde finalmente se siente como en casa. Si bien Breyvic ha disfrutado de su corto tiempo con Scranton / Wilkes-Barre, sabe que la oportunidad de regresar a las Grandes Ligas está a solo una llamada, especialmente por la forma en que los Yankees han sido mordidos por la mala suerte con las lesiones.
"Solo estoy tratando de controlar lo que puedo controlar y continuar lo que he estado haciendo desde que estoy aquí", dice Valera. "Simplemente armar buenos turnos al bate y jugar una defensa sólida.
