The SeaWolves (28-14) took down Hartford (21-20) 11-2 on Thursday.
Erie scored three runs in the first inning against Mason Green. With two on and two out, Carlos Mendoza lined a single to right. Juan Guerrero, the Hartford right fielder, missed the ball for a fielding error. The error scored allowed both runs to score on the play and put Mendoza at third. Roberto Campos followed with an RBI triple to make it 3-0.
Hartford got two back in the third against Erie starter Joseph Montalvo. With two out, Benny Montgomery hit a two-run single to make it 3-2.
In the bottom of the third, Erie put two in scoring position with one out following a walk to Thayron Liranzo and a double by Jake Holton. Carlos Mendoza scored Liranzo with a groundout, making it 4-2 and knocking out Green. Sam Weatherly entered and walked three consecutive batters, including Jim Jarvis to force home Holton. With Danny Serretti batting, catcher Bryant Betancourt tried to pick off Jarvis from first and threw the ball into right field, allowing another run to score and making it 6-2.
Erie tacked on three more in the fifth against rehabbing Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik. Vodnik walked Mendoza and gave up a single to Campos. A passed ball advanced the runners before Chris Meyers’ sacrifice fly made it 7-2. Against Welinton Herrera, Jarvis hit an RBI single. Serretti scored Jarvis with an RBI double to make it 9-2.
Montalvo turned in the longest start by an Erie starter this season. He allowed two runs on four hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out six.
The SeaWolves plated a pair in the eighth after Campos doubled and scored on Guerrero’s second error of the game on Meyers’ single. Meyers eventually scored on a double play.
Montalvo (3-2) broke a two-start losing streak with the win over Green (2-2).
Erie and Hartford continue the series at 6:05 p.m. on Friday as Troy Melton pitches for Erie against Connor Staine.
