In a duel of two flame-throwing starters, neither RHP Drew Rasmussen nor RHP Sixto Sanchez received a decision as the Biloxi Shuckers (19-20) picked up a 2-1 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (14-25) in 10 innings on Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Rasmussen allowed just two hits over four dominant innings, the longest outing of his career in the Brewers system. The righty broke two bats and induced a double play in his scoreless start. Meanwhile, Sanchez retired the first ten batters that he faced before Trent Grisham singled with one out in the fifth, the lone hit allowed by the #1 prospect in the Marlins system.
RHP Devin Williams worked two perfect innings and RHP Aaron Kurcz also worked a 1-2-3 seventh for the Shuckers. RHP Nate Griep (W, 2-1) ran into trouble in the eighth after a lead-off walk to Bryson Brigman and a J.C. Millan single, putting two men on base. Griep struck out the next two batters to escape the jam and retired the side in order in the ninth to send the game to extras.
In the top of the tenth, bonus runner Dillon Thomas moved to third on a wild pitch by RHP Brett Graves (L, 1-1) and came in to score on an RBI single from Weston Wilson. Luis Aviles Jr. then singled to put two men on base, bringing up Bruce Caldwell. The Shuckers second baseman laid down a bunt that Graves picked up and attempted to throw to third to get the lead runner. Grave's throw went wide of third, allowing Wilson to come around and score on the error, giving the Shuckers a 2-0 lead.
RHP Luke Barker (S, 2) came on to pitch the bottom of the tenth and retired Joe Dunand to start the frame. Brigman then singled up the middle, scoring bonus runner Justin Twine to put the Jumbo Shrimp on the board at 2-1. Corey Bird knocked a single to put the tying run in scoring position and the winning run at first. After a strikeout of Millan, Santiago Chávez laced a ball into left-center field, but Grisham laid out for a diving catch that ended the game to secure the Shuckers victory.
It's a rubber match to decide the series between the Shuckers and Jumbo Shrimp on Wednesday at 11:05 am CT. RHP Bowden Francis (0-3, 7.20) takes the hill for Biloxi against Jacksonville RHP Jordan Yamamoto (2-3, 4.14). The game can be heard locally in Biloxi on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App and can be seen on MiLB.TV.
