It was an up-and-down game for the Ogden Raptors and their fans. The visiting Orem Owlz, a day after scoring 10 runs in the final two frames for a 16-5 victory, plated another three in the first inning and five in the fourth for a large lead. Ogden stormed back to pull within one in the middle innings, but they couldn't get anything else going and saw the Owlz score four more in the ninth for a 13-8 victory.
Trailing, 3-0, in the bottom of the second, Cristian Santana picked up where he left off after a 3-for-4 Wednesday night with a single to right-center. One out later, Romer Cuadrado deposited a ball over the left-center field fence to pull the Raptors within two on his first round tripper of the season.
A solo home run, two-run shot, bases-loaded walk and two-run single helped Orem build a 9-2 lead going to the bottom of the fourth.
First baseman Nick Yarnall, who played 15 games for the Raptors in 2016 without hitting a home run, sent the fifth pitch of the home half of the fourth over the right-field fence for a solo blast. Ogden then loaded the bases, but the next two hitters struck out. That brought up number nine hitter Samuel Ortiz, who lashed a single through the left side to bring in two and pull the home side within four.
After new addition Patrick Duester hurled a shutdown fifth despite an error, Yarnall stepped up again with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom half. Once again he crushed the ball, putting it over the fence in right-center for his second clout in as many innings. Following that, his Raptors teammates again loaded the bases with two outs, and again the bottom of the order came through. This time, Kevin LaChance's line drive found green in right-center field. Santana and Cuadrado crossed the plate, cutting Orem's lead to one run.
Each team's bullpen took over in the sixth through eighth innings, with a combined four runners reaching base. Former Raptors star first baseman Matt Jones took the mound for the first time at Lindquist Field and turned in two scoreless innings.
In the ninth inning, however, the Owlz opened it back up with four runs on just one hit to create breathing room.
After a four-game road trip, the Raptors will be back at Lindquist Field Tuesday, June 27th, to start a seven-game homestand against all three of their Pioneer League Southern Division opponents.
Tuesday will be a "Taco Tuesday, with $1 tacos available all night long while they last. Wednesday will see another edition of "Ugly Outfit Wednesdays", with prizes such as Raptors shirts and caps and a $100 gift card being awarded to fans wearing their worst.
