Fireflies Rally Late to Defeat GreenJackets

Columbia Forces Sunday Rubber Match at Segra Park

COLUMBIA, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets (8-14) fell just short against the Columbia Fireflies (14-9) on the road as their I-20 rivals rallied late to take game two by a score of 6-5.

The first runs of the game came in the third inning when the Fireflies took the lead on a two-run single by Omar Hernandez, followed by an RBI single by River Town to put Augusta behind 3-0 after three innings.

In the fifth, the GreenJackets entered the frame with no hits but that didn't stop them from producing a big inning as they loaded the bases thanks to three consecutive walks. Victor De Hoyos came up and he wasted no time as he drilled the first pitch down the left field line to clear the bases and tie the game at three. De Hoyos would later come in and score as Eliezel Stevens brought him home on a single up the middle to make it 4-3 Augusta. They'd add one more run in the inning with a run-producing single by Francisco Floyd as Stevens came in to score to push the GreenJackets' advantage to 5-3.

It would remain a 5-3 game up until the seventh inning when the Fireflies tied it on an RBI double by River Town with a fielder's choice bringing in one more a few batters later to even things up at five apiece.

In the next inning, Columbia used a pair of infield hits to put themselves in business quickly where they would eventually manufacture a run as River Town collected his third RBI of the game a sacrifice fly to left as Kadon Morton's throw to the plate was just barely late as Omar Hernandez scored the go-ahead run to make it 6-5 game in favor of the Fireflies.

The GreenJackets would be shut down in the final inning as they went down in order as Columbia held on to win 6-5, forcing a decisive game three tomorrow night.

Ben Wereski (2-3) was the winning pitching in relief for Columbia with Rob Griswold (3-3) taking the loss for Augusta.

Victor De Hoyos provided the most impactful hit of the night with his base-clearing double in the fifth to tie the game. Eliezel Stevens and Francisco Floyd each collected an RBI in the frame as well with Floyd finishing the night reaching base three times for the second consecutive night.

The final matchup of the 2022 season between the GreenJackets and Fireflies is on Sunday night at 5:05 pm at Segra Park where Augusta can win the three-game set and season series with a victory.
