KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 8, 2017) - The Intimidators pounded out 15 hits, including seven in a 5-run third inning, but the Tourists rallied for seven unanswered runs as Asheville won, 7-5, on Monday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Kannapolis (15-15) dropped three of four games to Asheville to lose the series.
With the Intimidators up 5-0 after three innings, the Tourists capitalized on an error to return-fire with a 4-run top of the fourth. One inning later, Asheville captured the lead thanks to a ball lost in the lights.
Jimmy Lambert (4-1) took the hard-luck loss for Kannapolis, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits over 6.0 innings. Asheville's Bryan Baker (2-1) struck out five over 2.0 scoreless relief innings to pick up the win. Tourists pitchers combined to strikeout 17 batters on the night.
The Intimidators revved the engines for five runs in the third inning as seven players hit safely - including three infield singles - to jump out to a big early lead. After Joel Booker's sac-fly cashed Nate Nolan for the game's first run, Jameson Fisher added a 2-run double for a 3-0 lead. Zach Remillard and Antonio Rodriguez added RBI-hits to cap the inning as Kannapolis sent 10 men to the plate. The Intimidators would not cross the plate in another frame on the night.
Down 5-1 with two outs in the top of the fourth, Asheville's Robbie Perkins grounded a ball to shortstop Max Dutto, whose throw to first base sailed wide, allowing Luis Castro to score on the error. One batter later, Max George doubled in two runs to pull the Tourists with a run, 5-4.
In the top of the fifth, Willie Abreu lifted a ball into the centerfield sky, and both Joel Booker and Micker Adolfo had trouble locating the ball, which fell for an RBI-double to tie the game. Abreu eventually scored on a Castro single to give the Tourists the lead, 6-5.
Kannapolis is off Tuesday before hitting the road on Wednesday to open a 7-game road trip to Augusta and Rome. The team returns home on Thursday, May 18, for a 7-game home stand against Hickory and Greenville.
