Flying Chanclas Comeback Attempt Falls Short on Thursday

SAN ANTONIO – Following last night’s walk-off victory, the Flying Chanclas took the field Thursday night for game three against the Midland RockHounds. The RockHounds got out to an early advantage and plated six runs within the first three innings of play. Chanlas starter Nolan Watson lasted 2.1 innings and was on the hook for all six runs. San Antonio fought back and brought the deficit to within one run in the seventh inning. The Chanclas failed to capitalize on multiple scoring chances as they left 15 runners on base and fall to Midland 6-5.
Nolan Watson was the starting pitcher for the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio. He surrendered the first runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Chase Calabuig started off the game with a double to right field. Zack Gelof gave Midland the lead with a home run over the right field wall. His 11th long ball of the season made it a 2-0 ballgame.
J.T. Ginn was the starting pitcher for the RockHounds. The right-hander pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom half of the first inning. With two outs in the inning, Brandon Dixon and Yorman Rodriguez hit back-to-back singles. Juan Fernandez drew a walk to load the bases. Webster Rivas grounded out to end the inning.
Midland improved their lead in the top of the third inning after scoring four runs on four hits. Calabuig doubled to start the inning. Gelof and Kyle McCann drew back-to-back walks. JJ Schwarz drove in two runs with a double to right field. Tyler Soderstrom drove in the other two runs with a single to right field. After allowing a base hit to Logan Davidson, Watson was replaced by Felix Minjarez. The RockHounds improved their lead to 6-0.
The Flying Chanclas scored their first runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Domingo Leyba started the inning with a double down the right field line. After stealing third base, Leyba scored on a single from Tirso Ornelas. Ornelas advanced to second base on a ground out from Rodriguez and then stole third base. A wild pitch from Ginn allowed Ornelas to score their second run of the game. San Antonio trailed 6-2.
San Antonio continued the comeback effort and scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Facing Nick Highberger, Rivas was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. After recording the first out, Ethan Skender hit a single to right field. A wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position. Matthew Acosta grounded out and Rivas scored to cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Chanclas added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ornelas began the inning with a base hit to center field. Dixon drove him in with a double down the left field line. After a ground out, Dixon advanced to third base with a stolen base. He came around to score on a single from Fernandez. San Antonio trailed 6-5.
San Antonio loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the eighth inning. Facing Michael Danielak, Ornelas hit a single and Kelvin Melean reached base on a fielding error. He was replaced by Charles Hall who retired the first batter he faced. A wild pitch from Hall moved both runners into scoring position. He issued a walk to Fernandez to load the bases. Rivas struck out looking to end the scoring threat.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Bryce Conley entered to pitch for Midland. After retiring the first batter, he allowed a single to Skender. Skender advanced to third base on a stolen base and wild pitch. Acosta struck out swinging for the second out of the inning. Leyba drew a walk to keep the inning and game alive. Ornelas grounded out to end the ballgame.

Right-hander Jack Cushing (9-2, 3.54) is scheduled to pitch for the RockHounds. First pitch is expected at 7:05 p.m. from Nelson Wolff Stadium.
