FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (15-22) connected for four home runs on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium and put up a season-best run total in a 14-6 victory over the Carolina Mudcats (22-15). Jordan Brewer belted his first long ball of 2021, and Luke Berryhill became the first player this season with a five-RBI game.

Brewer opened the scoring in the first inning with his solo homer against Jhoan Cruz (L, 2-4) before Carolina grabbed the lead with a three run bottom of the second.

Trailing 3-1, Yohander Martinez was hit by a pitch to start the top of the third and Shay Whitcomb reached on a single. J.C Correa cut it to a one-run game with an RBI single and Brewer put Fayetteville back in front 4-3 with a two-run double off Cruz.

The offense continued to pour on once Bryan Arias reached on his second walk of the game. Justin Dirden drilled the first pitch he saw over the left-center field wall for his first three-run homer of the season, jumping the game to 7-3. Nerio Rodriguez then singled to chase Cruz from the game, and Berryhill capped an eight-run inning with a two-run homer off Joey Matulovich.

On the mound, Shea Barry returned from the injured list and worked three innings, surrendered seven hits, four runs and struck out two. Misael Tamarez (W, 1-1) took over in the fourth, racked up five strikeouts and was lifted in the sixth for Ernesto Jaquez. Jayson Schroeder surrendered a homer during the seventh to Joey Wiemer but managed to strike out the side in the inning. Jonathan Sprinkle in his return from Corpus Christi tossed 1.1 scoreless inning to close the game.

Fayetteville blew the game open with a five-run top of the eighth inning. Correa and Brewer opened with walks and scored on an RBI single from Arias and fielder’s choice from Dirden. Daniel drew a free pass against Jackson Gillis, and Berryhill cleared the bases with a three-run home run off Kent Hasler to punctuate the 14-run scoring effort.

Game three of the six-game series is scheduled for Thursday at Five County Stadium with first pitch at 7:00 pm ET. RHP Peyton Plumlee is scheduled to start for Fayetteville and Carolina will roll out LHP Brock Begue.
