Four Dash Blasts Lead to 8-4 Win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 29, 2022) — The Winston-Salem Dash jumped ahead early and extended their lead late in the game to take down the Aberdeen Ironbirds 8-4.

Aberdeen did take the lead early on, thanks to a leadoff home run by Collin Burns to open up the home half of the first inning.

However, Winston-Salem got a leadoff home run of their own in the top of the second inning. It was Luis Mieses, who launched an 0-2 pitch the other way into left field to tie the game at one. Later in the frame, Adam Hackenberg singled and then Harvin Mendoza immediately blasted the first pitch he saw out to right field for a two-run bomb, and the Dash pulled ahead 3-1.

Winston-Salem got a run apiece in the third and fourth innings. Colson Montgomery clobbered a solo blast in the third, and Mendoza hit his second home run of the game, this one a solo job, in the fourth inning to push the lead to 5-1.

The Ironbirds were able to stem the bleeding in the bottom of the fourth inning. John Rhodes drew a leadoff walk, then TT Bowens joined the party with a two-run homer to center field. That cut the Dash advantage to 5-3.

Aberdeen got one more run back in the bottom of the sixth, on the game’s seventh home run. This one was off the bat of Billy Cook, on the first pitch of the at-bat to make it just a one run Dash lead at 5-4.

On to the seventh inning, where Winston-Salem was able to add some insurance runs. Jason Matthews drew a leadoff walk, and was later pushed to second base on a Duke Ellis groundout. Then, Colson Montgomery picked up his second hit of the game, a double into left field to score Matthews and extend the Dash lead to 6-4. Later in the inning, Luis Mieses lined a single to to right which plated Montgomery, to make it a 7-4 ballgame.

Adam Hackenberg singled to lead off the top of the eighth inning, before a Jason Matthews single pushed Montgomery to third base. The next batter, Duke Ellis, smoked a single into center to score Montgomery, and the Dash lead 8-4.

Vince Vannelle got the final out in the home half of the eighth, then worked through a scoreless ninth inning to close the door on an 8-4 Dash win. Karan Patel was the winning pitcher for Winston-Salem, and Connor Gillespie took the loss for Aberdeen.
