Delmarva Ends Week with Heartbreaking Loss
FREDERICKSBURG, VA: The Delmarva Shorebirds (37-71, 14-28) were walked off by the Fredericksburg Nationals (67-40, 21-20) in Sunday's series finale, 9-8.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Shorebirds struck first on an RBI single by Juan Ortega, who plated Joshua Liranzo. He was followed by Jemone Nuel, who brought in Ortega with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Fredericksburg responded in the bottom half with a solo home run by Coy James (18), trimming Delmarva's lead to 2-1.
Joshua Liranzo put the Shorebirds back up by two with an RBI single in the fourth, giving Delmarva a 3-1 advantage.
The Fred Nats came back to take the lead in the next half-inning, starting with a home run by Hunter Hines (9) to make it a 3-2 game. An RBI single by Dashyll Tejeda tied the game at three. A sacrifice fly by Sir Jamison Jones and another run-scoring single by Coy James put the Fred Nats in front, 5-3.
The Shorebirds battled back in the top of the sixth, pulling within one on an RBI single that scored Jordan Sanchez. With the bases loaded, Juan Ortega (2) belted Delmarva's first grand slam of the season, catapulting the Shorebirds into the lead at 8-5 and giving Ortega a career-high five RBIs.
The Fred Nats put together a furious two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth, with a home run by Sir Jamison Jones (10), an RBI single by Manuel Cabrera, and a double by Gavin Fien that scored Cabrera, tying the game at eight entering the final inning.
In the ninth, the Fred Nats completed their comeback and walked off the Shorebirds on a game-winning single by Sir Jamison Jones, scoring Rafael Ramirez Jr. from second base and handing the Shorebirds a heartbreaking 9-8 loss.
Cesar Rojas (3-2) was the winning pitcher for Fredericksburg, with Jack Crowder (0-1) taking the loss for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds return home to begin a six-game series with the Salem RidgeYaks on Tuesday, with first pitch of the opening game scheduled for 7:05 PM.
