Frozen Iguanas Fall 5-2 to Mighty Mussels in Rain-Shortened Saturday Night

JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (26-27; 59-60), under the alternate identity of the “Palm Beach Frozen Iguanas,” fell to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (27-25; 64-53) by a final score of 5-2 on a wet, lightning-filled Saturday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Palm Beach will remain seven games back of Daytona for first place in the FSL East Division with 13 games remaining in the regular season.

The Cardinals scored first in the bottom of the first inning against Fort Myers starting pitcher Callan Fang. Ryan Mitchell was hit by a pitch, Sebastian Dos Santos and Matthew Miura each drew a walk. Miguel Hernandez was hit by a pitch with two outs which plated the first run of the game as Palm Beach took a 1-0 lead.

In the middle of the third inning, the game was delayed for just over an hour. The first hitter after the game resumed was Mitchell who launched a solo home run to left-center field, his 13^th home run of the season to give Palm Beach a 2-0 lead after three innings.

Payton Graham had his start cut a bit short due to the delay but finished with three scoreless and hitless innings and allowed just one walk with three strikeouts in a no-decision.

Yadiel Batista (BS, 2) came out of the Palm Beach bullpen to pitch the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Carson Tinney hit a double and Aidan Teel delivered an RBI single to cut the Frozen Iguanas’ lead to 2-1.

The game settled down until the top of the sixth inning when the Mighty Mussels responded on offense. With one out and runners at first and second base, Isaiah Lane hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. Nathan Shinn (L, 1-2) came in for the final out and stranded two runners on base to limit the damage.

In the top of the seventh inning, Fort Myers took their first lead of the game. With two outs, Murphy Hernandez hit an infield single and reached third base on a throwing error by Shinn. The next hitter, Colby Turner, hit an RBI single to right field to put the Mussels ahead. With the runner at first base, Tinney hit a two-run home run off the batter’s eye to put Fort Myers ahead 5-2.

After the seventh inning ended, the game entered its second delay and ultimately did not exit it as Palm Beach fell 5-2 in seven innings as part of a rain-shortened Saturday night.
