Starting pitcher Shane Murphy (3-0, 3.05) was sensational. The lefty pitched six innings, giving up only four hits, no runs, and one walk with six strikeouts. Jonathan Clark pitched two innings, giving up one hit, no runs, and a walk with two strikeouts. Jarold Rosado pitched a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the shutout.
Birmingham (17-21, 43-64) scored in the top of the first inning. Dylan Campbell started the game reaching on a throwing error. Campbell stole second base. Caleb Bonemer and Anthony DePino walked to load the bases. Ryan Burrowes singled on a ground ball to right field, scoring Campbell and Bonemer on the play. The Barons took the 2-0 early lead.
In the top of the second inning, outfielder Samuel Zavala hit a solo home run to center field. The home run was his 11th on the season. The Barons took a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, Alec Briley doubled to center field. With two outs, Burrowes singled on a ball hit to right field, scoring Briley, and the Barons led 4-0. In the top of the fifth inning, Bonemer hit a solo home run, his 11th of the season, and the Barons led 5-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, Zavala was hit by a pitch. Jordan Sprinkle singled to right field. A passed ball sent Zavala and Sprinkle up a base. Campbell singled on a ground ball to center field, scoring Zavala and Sprinkle. The Barons led 7-0.
Rocket City (20-18, 55-51) could only get five hits in the loss, but still leads Birmingham by three games in the second half playoff race.
Up next, the Barons will play Game 6 against Rocket City on Sunday. The Barons will send RHP Dylan Cumming (3-6, 5.48) to the mound while the Trash Pandas will counter with RHP Eybersson Polanco (4-6, 3.86). First pitch is at 4:05 pm.
