NORFOLK, VA — Jay Groome earned a win in his Triple-A debut with six shutout innings, leading the Worcester Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Norfolk Tides on Friday night at Harbor Park.

Groome, the 12th overall pick in the 2016 draft and the 6th-ranked pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization (MLB.com), scattered five singles and three walks while striking out five batters. He struck out the side in the first inning, and had perfect frames in the second and sixth.

Worcester took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a sac fly from Connor Wong and an RBI double by Christin Stewart. Groome stranded two runners on base in each of the next two innings, and the WooSox broke the game open with four runs on six consecutive hits in the seventh.

Pedro Castellanos and Nick Sogard started the rally with singles, and both scored on base knocks from Grant Williams and Devlin Granberg to extend the lead to 4-0. Wong then lined a double to left, and Stewart plated a pair with a hit to the right field wall to cap the rally at 6-0.

Norfolk led off the ninth inning with back-to-back home runs, but Frank German was summoned from the bullpen to record three consecutive outs and secured the 6-2 win.

The series continues on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. with Red Sox top pitching prospect Brayan Bello scheduled to start for Worcester.
