Game Two Goes to Grizzlies to Even Series

FRESNO, Calif. – The Grizzlies returned the favor against the Ports on Wednesday night at Chukchansi Park, defeating Stockton 10-1 to tie the series at one game apiece. The Ports still hold a two-game lead over Fresno for the second-half playoff spot in the Cal League North.

The Ports fell behind early, as reigning Cal League Pitcher of the Week, Corey Braun, was uncharacteristically wild in the first inning. After retiring the first two batters, he gave up a full-count single to Rockies No. 4 prospect, Cristian Arguelles. That was followed by a base hit for Daniel Jackson, and back-to-back walks to bring in a run.

Braun was going into his wind up when a pitch timer violation was called on him on a full count to load the bases before walking the next batter on four pitches. He would uncork a wild pitch after that to produce another run and make it 2-0 Fresno after an inning of play.

The bottom of the second started with Braun issuing a full-count walk, before Colorado’s 18th-ranked prospect belted his first Cal League home run out to left center to make it 4-0 Fresno. Two doubles with a single in between capped off a four-run frame and chased Braun from the game to put the Grizzlies up 6-0.

Stockton’s offense wasn’t able to string hits together, and would hit into three doubles plays on the night. They didn’t get on the board until the fourth when catcher Alex Sosa blasted a home run to the right of the batter’s eye in center for his second long ball with the Ports.

The Grizzlies got a run off a double play ball in the fifth to make it 7-1. Ports relief pitcher Tyler August would be ok after a scary moment when a line drive hit him in the head and caromed right to third base, but he was able to walk off under his own power.

The Ports third double play they hit into did produce a run in the sixth, scoring Drew Burress to make it 7-2. But after Cole Miller threw two scoreless innings, Wilfred Alvarado gave up three in the eighth to give Fresno their 10-2 advantage.

UP NEXT: Game three is set for a 6:50 PM first pitch, with LHP Luichi Casilla (0-1, 3.60) making his fourth start for Fresno versus RHP Colin Fitzgerald (0-0, 0.00) who will make his pro debut for Stockton.
