The Thunder, presented by NJM Insurance, rode early offense and a strong double-A debut from right-hander Rony Garcia in a 4-2 win over the Erie SeaWolves on Sunday afternoon at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Holding Erie scoreless over his five innings of work, the 21-year-old Garcia (1-0) walked four but struck out eight and allowed just one hit en route to earning the win.
The victory completed a three-game series sweep for the Thunder (13-7).
After two consecutive hits to open the bottom of the first for the Thunder, Ben Ruta plated Hoy Jun Park from third with a sacrifice fly to center field. Chris Gittens followed with an RBI-double to score Wendell Rijo from first for a 2-0 Thunder lead.
Ruta added an RBI-double in the second and Gittens slugged a solo homer over the batter's eye in center field in the fifth to extend the Thunder advantage to 4-0.
Erie (9-10) chipped away against reliever Jose Mesa Jr. in the seventh inning, as run-scoring hits by Chad Sedio and Sergio Alcántara trimmed the Thunder lead to two.
After Mesa allowed a leadoff single in the eighth, right-hander Brooks Kriske entered and retired the next three batters in a row. Kriske went on to pitch the ninth, working around a pair of one-out walks to seal the win.
SeaWolves starter Logan Shore (1-2) allowed four runs on seven hits across five innings and was charged with the loss.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Monday night at 7 p.m. against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. RHP Brody Koerner (0-1, 1.80) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Hector Perez (1-1, 8.78) will go for New Hampshire. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
