Modesto, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino opened a three-game set at John Thurman Field with a 6-0 win over the Modesto Nuts. The 66ers (9-10) got a three-hit game from Luis Rengifo and six brilliant innings from starter Joe Gatto as Inland Empire's pitching corps notched its third shutout of the year.
The Sixers jumped on Modesto starter Danny Garcia (0-2) out of the gate as Jahmai Jones ripped a double to open the game followed by Rengifo's two-run homer to left center field. It was the Naguanaugua, VZ native's first homer of the year. The Sixers added three more in the fourth. After two quick outs Inland Empire got a triple from Jordan Zimmerman, RBI double from Brandon Sandoval, RBI single for Jones and RBI double for Rengifo. The Sixers capped the scoring in the fifth on Kevin Williams Jr.' RBI single for a 6-0 lead. Meanwhile Gatto and the gang were rolling. Gatto went six scoreless allowing just one hit, a first-inning double to Evan White, and two walks while striking out five. The righty from Hammonton, NJ has now won his last two starts and has not allowed a run in his last 12 IP. Carlos Salazar tossed a scoreless seventh with a K after being activated from the DL on Tuesday. Adrian Almeida fanned four over the final two frames to complete the shutout and lower his ERA to 0.75. Modesto (6-13) did not have a baserunner reach third base in the game.
