Peterson contributes at plate as Sags' DH
Defense is a big part of what Padres shortstop Jace Peterson can contribute, but despite only playing offense Wednesday, the 24-year-old still made an impact.
Serving as the designated hitter, Peterson went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a key run scored for Surprise in an 11-inning 4-4 tie with Salt River in Arizona Fall League action.
The shortstop made his most notable contribution in the sixth inning, singling with a man aboard and later scoring the Saguaros' fourth run on a single by Padres' No. 4 prospect Hunter Renfroe.
Peterson lifted his average to .240 through 13 games. He's stolen five bases in six tries and has seven walks against five strikeouts. The AFL stint has also given him a chance to get reps at second and third base.
After starting the year with a short stint in Double-A and having a cup of coffee in the Majors, Peterson put together an outstanding season at Triple-A El Paso, hitting .306 with 12 steals and an .870 OPS in 68 games. The infielder shuttled back and forth to San Diego throughout the season, hitting .113 in 53 at-bats.
All those trips to and from the Majors provided Peterson with his biggest lesson in 2014.
"For me, it's just to be patient," he said. "Do what you do and trust what you do. Just try to contribute somehow every day, whether it's running the bases, making a good play on defense. Something to help the team win."
The performance was one of a few impressive ones by Padres farmhands. Renfroe, who snapped out of a slump with a big offensive day Tuesday, followed up by going 2-for-5. The Padres outfielder doubled and plated two while striking out three times.
Meanwhile, Padres' No. 5 prospect Trea Turner used his notable speed to churn out Surprise's first run. The 2014 first-rounder (13th overall) reached on an infield single, then stole second and scored on a single by Cincinnati's Kyle Waldrop.
Turner finished 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, giving him four for the Fall League season. The shortstop is hitting .286 through six AFL games.
"Playing with guys [you] see in Spring Training and year-round makes it better," Peterson said. "It's always a joy to watch them do well."
Surprise led, 4-1, heading into the eightth inning when Rockies' No. 11 prospect Trevor Story popped a leadoff homer.
The next inning, D-backs' No. 6 prospect Brandon Drury led off with a single to left. Drury scored on a triple to center by Taylor Featherston (Rockies), and Featherston later plated the tying run on a groundout by Andrew Aplin (Astros).
Salt River starter Anthony DeSclafani allowed two earned runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings. The Marlins' No. 3 prospect has a 4.24 ERA in four AFL starts. Over 22 innings, the right-hander has struck out 22 while walking four with one homer allowed.
