Huntsville Stars to Host Fundraiser Saturday for Shane Malone Fund
Shane, an 8-year-old from Madison County, tragically lost his life April 20 in a lawnmower accident. On the way to the hospital, his family was involved in a car wreck, leaving his mother Gina in surgical intensive care. Shane's brother, J.D., and a family friend received minor injuries.
The Stars will pay tribute to the young athlete before the game against the Tennessee Smokies. Malone's Scout Pack #391 will present the nation's colors and the Storm, his baseball team, will take the field with the Stars before the singing of the National Anthem for a moment of silence. Stars General Manager Buck Rogers said, "I think the magnitude of this tragedy to this young family has affected us all. The Huntsville Stars will help any way we can to support this community fundraiser."
Throughout the game, volunteers from EMCRA will sell raffle tickets to raffle off generous prizes donated by local businesses. Malone family friend and EMCRA member Kirk Minor said, "The outpouring of support from local businesses in Huntsville and Madison County has been tremendous."
A few big-ticket raffle items to be auctioned off include a gas grill from Lowe's Home Improvement ($175 value), a 42" flat screen from EMCRA ($700 value), a one-night stay at the Holiday Inn Downtown Huntsville (a $100 value), and a kid's tractor from John Deere ($125 value). Local restaurants including O'Charley's, Applebee's and Logan's Roadhouse have donated gift certificates as well.
