Jays acquire second base prospect Travis

Eastern League All-Star traded by Tigers for speedy outfielder Gose
November 13, 2014

As a Florida native, Devon Travis is used to warm weather. As of late Wednesday night, however, he'll have to get used to a cooler climate.

The Tigers traded their No. 4 prospect to the Blue Jays for speedy center fielder Anthony Gose.

"We like Devon Travis a lot. We think he's got a chance to be a real good player," Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski told MLive.com.

Travis played second base for most of the first three years of his career, but with Ian Kinsler holding down the position at the Major League level and top prospect Hernan Perez next in line, the Tigers moved him to center field in the final days of the regular season.

Four games into the season with Double-A Erie, the 23-year-old strained an oblique muscle and spent five weeks on the disabled list. His production dipped from the year before as Travis posted a .298/.358/.460 slash line with 10 homers, 52 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 100 games.

The Florida State product suffered a sports hernia that ended his season two games early. While rehabbing from surgery, Travis continued to work in the outfield.

"It's something that I look at as an opportunity to broaden my horizons and a chance that I'm thankful for," he told the Battle Creek Enquirer. "It's just another chance to live my dreams."

A few hours before the trade, Travis was named the Tigers' top prospect by Baseball America. After the deal, he told MLive.com, "The Tigers do it right, through and through. I wouldn't have rather been drafted by any other team. I'm thankful for everything they've done for me."

While the Blue Jays have plenty of youngsters on the left side of the infield, there were no second basemen among the organization's top prospects. Travis, installed as Toronto's ninth-ranked prospect by MLB.com, is expected to battle Ryan Goins and Maicer Izturis in Spring Training.

With Gose headed to Detroit, No. 3 prospect Dalton Pompey is poised to become the Blue Jays' Opening Day center fielder. This year, MLB.com's No. 88 overall prospect advanced from Class A Advanced Dunedin to the Majors, where he hit .231 in 17 games in September.

Gose, 24, spent most of the season with Toronto but also batted .244 with four homers, 25 RBIs and 21 steals in 51 games with Triple-A Buffalo.
