Right-handed pitcher John Ely, who pitched in Boston's farm system for Pawtucket last season as a reliever, signed a minor-league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.
Ely signed as a free agent with the Red Sox organization in December 2013 and split last season between Single A Greenville and Triple-A Pawtucket.
In 25 games with Pawtucket last season, he posted a 2.52 ERA in 39.1 innings, striking out 35 and earning one save.
