Skipper Rabelo returning to Connecticut
NORWICH, Conn. -- The Connecticut Tigers, Class A Short Season affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, announced their 2015 coaching staff led by second-year Manager Mike Rabelo. The 2015 season kicks off Friday, June 19th at Dodd Stadium as the Tigers take on the Tri-City ValleyCats at 7:05 pm.
Returning for his fourth season in Norwich and second as Manager is Mike Rabelo. Rabelo took over as Manager of the Tigers in 2014 and guided the team to its most successful season in franchise history. The team finished the season at 42-34 and captured the New York-Penn League wildcard, marking the first playoff appearance in the club's five year existence. Rabelo previously spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons as the team's Hitting Coach. After being selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the 2001 MLB Draft, Rabelo spent ten seasons in professional baseball and time in the Major Leagues with Detroit (2006-2007) and Florida (2008).
"I'm ecstatic to be returning for a second season as Manager in Norwich. It's a great town with great fans and a great front office staff to work with," said Rabelo. "After giving the fans a taste of playoff baseball in 2014, we hope to use that energy to make another run at it in 2015."
Also returning for his fourth season in Norwich is Hitting Coach Scott Dwyer. Having served as Hitting Coach during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Dwyer returned to the role in 2014 after two seasons in the same role with the West Michigan Whitecaps (Class A, Tigers). In 2014 Tigers' hitters set franchise records for runs (345), hits (670), doubles (138), and team batting average (.260).
Joining the Tigers for the first time in 2015 will be new Pitching Coach Carlos Chantres. Born in Miami, FL, Chantres spent the 2014 and 2011 seasons in Charleston, SC as Pitching Coach for the Charleston RiverDogs (Class A, Yankees) and the 2012 and 2013 seasons as Pitching Coach for the Staten Island Yankees in the New York-Penn League (Class A Short Season, Yankees). The 2014 Tigers' pitching staff had the second-highest strikeout total in franchise history (565) as well as the second lowest number of earned runs (231) and earned run average (3.13) in franchise history.
Also joining the Connecticut staff for the first time in 2015 will be Athletic Trainer Chris Vick. 2015 marks Vick's second season with the Detroit Tigers organization, having served as an Athletic Trainer for the Gulf Coast League Tigers in 2014. Prior to joining the Tigers organization, Vick spent the 2012 season as Athletic Training Intern with the Lakewood BlueClaws (Phillies, Class A) and the 2013 season as Athletic Training Intern with the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox, Class AA).
