A's nab righties Alvarez, Hahn from Padres
An offseason of change continues in California.
The Athletics acquired right-handed pitchers R.J. Alvarez and Jesse Hahn from the Padres in exchange for big league catcher Derek Norris, Minor League right-hander Seth Streich and an international signing bonus slot, the teams announced on Thursday.
The trade is the second in five months for Alvarez, who was sent from Anaheim to San Diego as part of the deal that moved Major League closer Huston Street to the Angels in July. Alvarez saw action at two Minor League stops and debuted in San Diego last season. In 38 relief outings between Double-A Arkansas and San Antonio, the Florida Atlantic product went 0-1 with a 1.25 ERA, striking out 61 batters while walking just 13 in 43 1/3 innings. The Angels' No. 10 prospect heading into 2014, Alvarez was summoned to San Diego with a September promotion.
Hahn also made his big league debut in 2014 and appeared in 14 games for San Diego, 12 as a starter. In total, the 2010 sixth-rounder went 7-4 with a 3.07 ERA. The Padres' No. 17 prospect entering the 2014 season, Hahn made 13 total appearances (10 starts) for Double-A San Antonio, going 2-1 with a 1.91 ERA.
A midseason and postseason All-Star in the California League last season, righty Streich made 22 starts for Class A Advanced Stockton, going 9-6 with a 3.16 ERA. Oakland's No. 10 prospect at the time of trade, Strech was a sixth-round pick out of the University of Ohio in 2010.
The acquisition of Norris is the latest in a string of offensively minded trades for the Padres. On Thursday night, San Diego completed a long-awaited deal to bring outfielder Matt Kemp to the Padres. A trade for Tampa Bay outfielder Wil Myers also is reportedly in its final stages. San Diego is set to ship its 2014 first-round pick Trea Turner and No. 8 prospect Joe Ross to Washington as part of the three-team blockbuster to acquire Myers.
