Large School All-Stars: Duarte, Alaniz Repeat

CORPUS CHRISTI - Calallen senior pitcher Dylan Duarte and Carroll senior outfielder Zach Alaniz are repeaters on the 2015 South Texas Pre-Season Large School All-Star Team announced Friday.

All 13 members will be recognized with their small school counterparts at the 11th South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet on January 28 at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center.

Duarte and another senior hurler, Kyle Hill, represent coach Steve Chapman's Wildcats, as does senior outfielder Chase Whetsel. Alaniz and a pair of juniors - third baseman Michael Berglund and pitcher Jon Mike Rodriguez - are expected to lead the Tigers for first-year head coach Mike Leal.

Tuloso-Midway and Victoria East placed two players each on the honor squad. T-M has the senior battery of pitcher Mason Hellums and catcher Nathan Freitag; Victoria East, which advanced to the 2014 Class 4A championship game, sports senior shortstop Jonathan Ortega and classmate Trent Whitley, an outfielder.

Senior second baseman Aaron Hernandez (Moody), senior first baseman Gabriel Gomez (Ray) and senior designated hitter Chris Gonzales (Alice) complete the team. The Trojans were hit exceptionally hard by graduation; Hernandez is their lone remaining starter from the 2013 state finalist.

The all-stars were nominated and selected by area Class 5A and 6A coaches.
