Cards, Kopp Snag Hooks 6-2

May 26, 2010
Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals returned to Hammons Field on Wednesday for the first game of a three game set with Corpus Christi and did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Adron Chambers led off with a walk and was followed by a single by Aaron Miles before back-to-back RBI singles by Matt Carpenter and Steven Hill. Andrew Brown then bounced into a fielder's choice to score Carpenter to give the Cards a 3-0 lead.

After a scoreless top of the 1st inning for Cardinals' starter David Kopp, Jon Gaston led off the top of the 2nd with a solo home run to cut the Springfield lead to 3-1.

The Hooks would get another run across in the top of the 4th as Koby Clemens reached on an error, went to second on an error, to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI groundout by German Duran to cut the Cardinals lead to just one run, 3-2.

David Kopp would cruise after the fourth inning only running into trouble in the top of the 7th when he had runners at 1st and 3rd, but induced an inning ending double play to end the Hooks' threat. Kopp tied a season high lasting seven innings allowing just one earned run on five hits while setting a season high with eight strikeouts.

Springfield would add to their lead in the bottom of the 8th inning as Steven Hill capped off a 4-for-4 day with a solo home run and Antone DeJesus blasted his first home run of a the season, a two-run shot, to put the Cards up 6-2.

Casey Mulligan would pitch both the 8th and 9th innings for the Cardinals striking out five, including striking out the side to end to game, to earn his first save of the season.
