January 6, 2015

Former Albuquerque Dukes pitcher Pedro Martinez was elected today into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He joins Don Sutton, Eddie Murray and Bobby Cox as the only current Hall of Famers to play for teams in the Duke City.

Needing to appear on 75 percent of voters' 549 ballots, Martinez received votes on 91.1 percent (500) of the ballots.

Martinez played in parts of three seasons from 1991-93 with the Dukes, posting a combined 10-9 record in 27 appearances with a 3.77 ERA. The first-ballot Hall of Famer enjoyed an 18-year Major League career that included a 219-100 record and 2.93 ERA. His winning percentage (.687) ranks second all-time in modern baseball history, while his strikeout rate (10.0) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.15) are third highest.

Martinez was an eight-time All-Star (1996-2000, 02, 05, 06), three-time Cy Young Award winner (1997, 99, 2000), World Series Champion (2004), Triple Crown winner (1999) and All-Star Game MVP (1999).

Other members of the 2015 National Baseball Hall of Fame Class include Craig Biggio, John Smoltz and Randy Johnson. They will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, on July 26.

Sutton was a member of the Albuquerque Dodgers in 1965 when he posted a 15-6 record with a 2.78 ERA. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998. Eddie Murray played in nine games with the 1997 Albuquerque Dukes as part of a rehab assignment. He was 8-for-26 with two homers and nine RBI.

In addition to the three former players in the Hall of Fame, former Dukes manager Tommy Lasorda was also inducted into the Hall in 1997, and Ralph Kiner remains the only member of the Hall of Fame to be born in New Mexico. The six-time All-Star played in 10 seasons, compiling a .279 batting average with 216 doubles, 39 triples, 369 homers and 1,015 RBI.
