Featured Silver Hawk - Charles Brewer

May 29, 2010
Every young baseball player aspires to compete in the major leagues for their hometown team. For Silver Hawk starter Charles Brewer, it might become a reality.

Brewer, a native of Scottsdale, Arizona, was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 12th round of the 2009 draft. Brewer calls getting drafted by Arizona "the coolest moment in my baseball career" and uses the possibility of pitching near home as a motivator on the mound.

"Thinking of pitching at home in front of family and friends twenty minutes away from my home, there's nothing better than that," said Brewer.

Brewer was a huge Diamondbacks fan growing up. He lived in the same neighborhood as former Arizona pitcher Randy Johnson and played long-toss with him in the offseason. Brewer also attended all seven games of the 2001 World Series that saw the Diamondbacks defeat the New York Yankees.

"One of the most exciting games I've ever seen was that Game Seven," said Brewer.

While growing up a Diamondbacks fan, Brewer played baseball for powerhouse Chaparral High School in Scottsdale; the same school that has produced major leaguers Paul Konerko (Chicago White Sox), Brian Bannister (Kansas City Royals), and Ike Davis (New York Mets). As a starter, Brewer didn't lose a game throughout his varsity career and helped lead his team to three state championships.

"My high school team could have definitely beaten some college teams I've seen," said Brewer. "Going out there and dominating people as an entire team is the most fun thing I've ever done."

At a younger age, Brewer also used to be a successful competitive golfer. He played in many tournaments throughout the country, most notably the Junior Pro-Am in San Diego.

"[Golf] was the only thing I focused on really," said Brewer. "It was the first sport I played. Once I started walking I picked up a golf club and started playing."

Eventually, however, Brewer decided that baseball was a better future for him than golf.

"I'm more of a team sport guy," said Brewer. "To be honest, golf definitely frustrated me, so baseball is definitely my niche."

While baseball obviously takes up most of Brewer's time, he still finds opportunities to get on the course in the South Bend area. This is important for Brewer, as breaks from the long baseball season are important for everybody involved.

"We play 140 games a year," said Brewer. "It's just a good thing to get yourself away from it and just kind of relax your mind."

Aside from golf, Brewer has one other thing to keep him motivated during the season: a chance to play near his hometown and for his favorite childhood team, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
