Swarzak, Miracle blank Yanks

Fort Myers righty matches season high with eight strikeouts
July 15, 2006
Anthony Swarzak struck out eight over seven innings and combined with Chris Schutt on a four-hitter Friday as the Fort Myers Miracle blanked the Tampa Yankees, 3-0, at Hammond Stadium.

Swarzak (5-6) struck out the first five batters and ended up allowing two hits and three walks for his second win in three starts. The eight strikeouts matched a season high for the 20-year-old right-hander, who lowered his ERA to 3.82.

Schutt yielded a pair of hits and struck out one over two innings as the Miracle (10-10) won for the third time in four games.

After allowing a two-out single to Edwar Gonzalez in the ninth, Schutt retired Rudy Guillen to notch his third save and seal Fort Myers' ninth shutout.

Jeremy Pickrel hammered a leadoff homer and Steven Tolleson delivered a sacrifice fly in the third to give Swarzak a quick 2-0 cushion. Erold Andrus scored in the seventh on a throwing error by reliever Edwar Ramirez as Brandon Roberts stole second.

Yankees starter Chase Wright (5-2) was touched for three runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking one over 6 1/3 innings.

Gonzalez also singled in the seventh and Jared Greenwood had two hits for Tampa (11-10).
